G.C.U welcomes new players for 2012

What a week we as coaches experienced with the kids! The first week went greater than planned, we got most of the players (kids) back from the festive season and soccer break.
For the first week we welcomed the players and introduced old players to the new ones who joined the G.C.U  family getting to know each other through playing games, exchanging names, where they're from and checking their fitness level.
What we have done for the first week was more in detail we had sprinklers on the field because WOW it was great Africa weather, it was HOT and the kids had great water fun under the sprinklers while others had played small sided games. They really enjoyed themselves.
The under 7 to under 13 received welcome back goodies such as t-shirts and pens and the seniors also received welcome back gifts such as American football jerseys . The t-shirts , football jerseys and pens were all donated from Pack For Purpose .
We at G.C.U started a inter club league on Saturday 21st January 2012.  It was a great success reason being the turnout of attendance was great of the players (kids) and the kids really enjoyed themselves.
We the G.C.U family would like to thank in great gratitude Pack for Purpose for the fantastic donation.

Schools back!

As school re-opens so does work! I enjoyed my holidays and to god all the glory for keeping me safe through the holidays. I also want to wish everybody a Happy New Year and everything of the best for 2012.

We started working in the gardens at Woodlands Primary this week, The spinach has grown quite well and we have been cleaning and harvesting it to hand over to the school to sell. By selling it we can buy more seeds to plant, this is a great way of providing food for our local community. We also started off by cleaning and packing away the books on the shelves in the 'new uplifted library' at Woodlands Primary.
I'm very excited for 2012 and the fact that all the coaches came in earlier to plan with the project leader Mario we are now ready for the boys and girls to launch next week. I can't wait to the see the kids!

Woodlands Primary gets a face lift!

One of GCU's big goals last year was to complete the transformation of the Woodlands
Library. With the help of GCU, volunteers, Rona the Librarian and the continual sponsors we are pleased to say that the library is now a functional space. Jenny and a few other volunteers helped to brighten up the space by painting on a few characters and animals on the walls and the GCU boys have been able to use the space for the tutoring program which is a huge achievement for us. You can really see how this disused space has been transformed into an inviting and perfect place to foster creative imaginations and inspire reading for the pupils at Woodlands Primary and the boys at GCU.

A caoches story: Codi Damons

My name is Codi Damons and I am 19 years old and I live in Heideveld Cape Town. I started playing soccer at the age of 11 years for a team called Santas football club in Heideveld. Things didn’t go well at that club so I decided to play for GCU.

I can still remember meeting Mario for the first time and asked him if I could play for GCU. From day one I felt love and part of a family, I think starting to play for GCU changed my life! I started coaching at the age of 16-17 years old, the reason why I started coaching is to make change in the community, for the love of the children and the love of the game. As a coach you get connected to all of the kids, you enjoy yourself when you see the kids smile and have fun.

I matriculated last year 2010. It was a bit difficult for me to coach and study at the same time, but for the love of the kids I pulled through and passed with a diploma. My personal goal is to be a professional soccer coach and I’ll work the skin of my feet and hands to get there!

I think if it wasn’t for GCU I would not have achieved what I wanted to achieve. Through hard work and the power of almighty god I will be a professional coach……… FORWARD EVER BACKWARDS NEVER.
Love Codi
